“SMASH:” Broadway in the Spotlight
After Madonna’s highly-reductive performance during last night’s Superbowl, America is hungry for some real entertainment. And that entertainment comes in the form of a TV Drama called “SMASH.” Although the show debuts tonight at 10/9c, executive producers Steven Spielberg, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have cleverly released the Pilot early (on hulu, etc.) to create a buzz, and my has it done just that.
The show brings Broadway vets Christian Borle, Megan Hilty and Brian d’Arcy James to the screen, as well as TV and film favorites Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston. And in the biggest moment of her career, Katherine McPhee shines as bright as the lights of Broadway. On the creative side, some of this industry’s finest are attached! Tony winners Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) directs, Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman (Hairspray) wrote wonderful numbers and Theresa Rebeck (Seminar) is the creator (all of whom also executive produce).
If you want to know what it’s like to write a Broadway show, watch “Smash.” This is trully the most realistic look at the business that we call show. Moreover, it’s an interesting drama that I think anyone could get behind. And who knows, it could bring a new audience to Broadway.
